About berniebrain

berniebrain— noun

A creative force that turns life experience, oddball humour, and God’s grace into practical, engaging software.

That sounds considerably more impressive than saying, “Bernie keeps thinking of things and then decides they should probably be apps.”

But that’s roughly how this started.

I’m Bernie Foster. I’ve spent most of my working life building things, fixing things, solving problems, dealing with people, and discovering that supposedly simple processes have an amazing ability to become unnecessarily complicated.

I’m a carpenter by trade, not a traditional software developer. That probably explains a lot about how I approach software.

If something is awkward, confusing, repetitive, or held together with three workarounds and a sticky note, I tend to wonder whether there’s a better way to build it.

Sometimes that becomes an app.

What gets built here

The projects under berniebrain don’t all belong to the same category.

Some solve practical business problems. Some help organize complicated processes. Some are built for churches, families, or communities. Some are stories. Some started because I needed a particular tool and couldn’t find one that worked the way I wanted.

A few are serious.

A few are slightly ridiculous.

Most are probably both.

What connects them is the basic idea that software should be useful, understandable, and pleasant to use.

You shouldn’t need a training seminar to figure out which button to press.

Why berniebrain exists

As the projects multiplied, they needed one front door.

That’s berniebrain.

It isn’t meant to turn every project into the same product or brand. Purple Widget can be Purple Widget. Cu-Ve-Be can be Cu-Ve-Be. Grace can be Grace.

Each project keeps its own purpose and identity.

berniebrain is simply where they live together.

Built from real life

A lot of software starts with technology and then goes looking for a problem.

I tend to work the other way around.

The starting point is usually something I’ve experienced, watched somebody struggle with, or caught myself saying:

“Why on earth do we do it this way?”

Then I start pulling it apart.

What actually needs to happen?

Who needs to know what?

Where does it break?

What can be removed?

What would make this easier for the person actually using it?

That process is probably the most consistent thing across everything I build.

And the grace part

God’s grace isn’t a marketing theme attached to berniebrain.

It is part of how I understand my life, my work, the people around me, and whatever ability I have to create something worthwhile.

Not every project here is explicitly Christian.

But the person making them is shaped by that grace.

Have a look around

Some projects are finished. Some are being actively developed. Others are still becoming whatever they’re going to become.

That’s intentional.

berniebrain is the home for the work—not a museum of perfectly finished things.
